Former U.S. President Barack Obama famously predicted that the United States and India would form the 21st century’s “defining partnership.” But now, the relationship between the world’s two biggest democracies is at its lowest point in decades after the Trump administration proposed a total of 50 percent tariffs on Indian products. The downturn in U.S.-India ties comes amid a spate of high-level diplomacy between New Delhi, Moscow, and Beijing.

Is the United States pivoting away from India, or will U.S.-India ties revert back to the trajectory that they were on for the last two decades? Former Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao joined FP Live to discuss what’s at stake. Rao is also a former Indian ambassador to the United States and China.
