U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that Israel and Hamas are reaching the “last opportunity” to come to a cease-fire. But even a plan that includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops and considerable humanitarian aid may merely be a return to the decades-old status quo. Have long-term peace goals been abandoned?
FP’s Ravi Agrawal was joined in conversation by Salam Fayyad, the former prime minister of the Palestinian Authority whose technocratic plan for a sovereign Palestinian state was lauded as “Fayyadism.” Does he still see a path to that future? What conditions are needed for sustainable governance? They will discuss the political landscape for Palestinians today.

Former Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad says the U.S. can and should do more to bring about a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
-
Fayyad proposes the inclusion of Hamas in the Palestine Liberation Organization in order to restore the entity’s legitimacy among Palestinian people and to solidify any commitment to nonviolence.
-
Fayyad argues that the current government in Israel is fundamentally opposed to the idea of Palestinian statehood and so proposes a workaround: Enshrine the Palestinian right to statehood in international law so that it no longer “need[s] to audition for [the rights] that no other people in the world” had to.

“I’m not someone who is invested a lot … because we’ve been through many administrations before,” said Fayyad about the outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. But he does sense a “significant” shift in the way Americans, especially young Americans, care about this issue.
